Laboratory of marine molluscan genetics and breeding, IOCAS, was created by Dr. Ximing Guo in 1997, in support of "100 talent" award of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. After entering the 21st century, Dr. Guofan Zhang leaded the group carried out fruitful researches on molluscan genetics and breeding. This lab made breakthroughs in genetic improvement and aquaculture technology of abalone (Haliotis discus hannai Ino), bay scallop (Argopecten irradians), and clam (Ruditapes philippinarum), as well as the taxonomy of oysters along the coast of China. Some new strains (i.e. "Zhongkehong" bay scallop)and new lines with distinctive characteristics have been applied in industries, and effectively promoted China's shellfish farming technology.

At the same time, this lab also achieved important progress in shellfish heterosis mechanism, QTL location, and functional gene research.
